CINNAMINSON — After about 18 months, the school district is ready to show off its completed renovations at the high school.
In October 2014, residents approved over $35 million in improvements, mainly at the school on Riverton Road. Just under $12 million was covered by the state. A portion of the funds went to security improvements at the New Albany Elementary, Eleanor Rush Intermediate and Cinnaminson Middle schools.
But the biggest improvements took place at the high school, with a new gymnasium and the connection of the second floor with new classrooms. Also, an elevator was added to transport teachers and students.
“It was an excellent project that will benefit this community for at least a generation,” Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi said.
The high school will open its doors Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. for the community to tour the school and take part in a short dedication ceremony.
Residents are encouraged to see “what their tax dollars paid for,” Illuzzi said. “Their support made it possible.”
Illuzzi said Wednesday was picked to encourage alumni who are home for Thanksgiving to attend. He said he and his staff are pleased with how the improvements turned out.
The high school project was one of the main reasons Illuzzi decided not to retire when his contract was up a few years ago. In an interview in August, he said the school was “an albatross” on the district’s back for years.
